Peace
Globally, Montessori education is called "Education for Peace," which can be accomplished by teaching children self-worth, respect (for themselves and all living creatures), patience, empathy, and humility. Many of these essential aspects of personality are not taught through specific materials on the shelf but through the invisible section of a Montessori environment (please visit the Community tab for more on Grace & Courtesy). A person who possesses humility seeks to add value to others, can take responsibility for their actions, and is filled with gratitude for what they have. I believe if I can succeed in inspiring any if not all of these characteristics within your child, then I have won a small victory in the fight for world harmony. A Montessori environment is meant to act as an extension of the child's home life, which is why it is called the "casa." I hope the exact expectations for mutual respect, peace, and harmony are practiced freely between the two environments. Below, I offer some ideas and insight into further inviting peace into your own homes.

The Peace Rose
In the classroom we use a single silk flower, a rose in a vase, as a peace symbol for simple conflict resolution. You may purchase the book, "The Peace Rose" by Alicia Olson from Montessori Services or on Amazon. There is a link to Montessori Services on my Prepared Environment tab!

Giving Voice to Peace
To reinforce your child's experience of peacemaking and problem solving in a community, it is important for children to verbalize in some way. In the classroom we we regularly use a universal recitation for peace that was passed down by one of Gandhi's nephews. This piece, plus many other ideas can by found in a book by Aline D. Wolf titled, Nurturing the Spirit in Non Sectarian Classrooms. This book can also be purchased on Amazon.
